Moving Water and Your Car


 

Did you know?

  • Flash floods happen very quickly, most times without warning.
  • Water may rise very rapidly
  • Six inches of water can move a small car
  • Twelve to eighteen inches of water can move a large car or sport utility vehicle

Ways to Protect Yourself...

  • Don't miscalculate the depth of water
  • Obey warnings, do not try to drive through water of unknown depth
  • Move to higher ground

If Your Car is Submerged in Water, Did you Know...?

  •  A car traveling just over 10mph, upon hitting the water is like hitting a stone wall
  • The car usually does a nose dive into a vertical position upon entering the water
  • Power in your car will continue to operate for up to 10 minutes (e.g. electric locks, windows, etc)

If you are in a Submerged Vehicle, Use These Tips for Survival...

  • Think first, try to contain your initial reaction to panic
  • Follow this 4 Step Emergency Action Plan
    1. Take a Breath
    2. Unbuckle your seat belt
    3. Roll down your window (or open the door)
    4. ESCAPE!
