STATION IV

Life Jackets (Personal Floatation Devices)

Equipment needed:

15-20 life jackets of various types, in sizes for adults and children, station sign, 2-3 volunteers

Lecture:

Explain and demonstrate the proper way to put on a jacket, make a safe entry and swim to safety.

1. There are 4 types of wearable PFD’s:

• Type I- Off-shore life jacket — offers the most flotation but may be uncomfortable when worn for long periods of time. Will float an unconscious victim face-up.
• Type II- Near shore buoyant vest — offers less flotation than Type I but has better wearability. May float an unconscious victim face-up.
• Type III- Floatation aid — offers least amount of flotation but has the best wearability. May not float an unconscious victim face-up.
• Type V- Special purpose device — approved only for specific activities

2. Keep all straps and strings on the outside, tie the top then secure the bottom.

3. Upon entry into the water hold the life jacket in place so you won’t get choked. Give yourself a big hug.

4. Surface, float on your back and swim to safety.

5. Tell about local or state laws requiring children to wear life jackets while boating.

Demonstration:

1. Have everyone try this.

2. Once everyone is in the water, explain the H.E.L.P. and huddle positions for prevention of hypothermia.
