STATION VI

Rescue Breathing

Equipment needed:

Adult, child and infant manikins, handouts, schedule of CPR classes, decontaminating solution, tables, blankets or mats, station sign, 2-3 volunteers.

Lecture:

Rescue breathing is the process of breathing for a victim who cannot breathe for themselves. The air that someone exhales has approximately sixteen percent oxygen, enough to sustain life.

Demonstration:

Make sure to decontaminate manikins according to CDC guidelines (1/4 household bleach per gallon of tap water) before each new participant. Ask participants to remove any lipstick, ChapstickTM, chewing gum, etc. Review health precautions and guidelines found in the American Red Cross Student Manual.

Go through the following steps on all three manikins (adult, child, infant).

1. Check:

a. Check the scene for safety

b. Check the victim for consciousness

2. Call for help, get the attention of a nearby person.

3. Care:

a. Open airway by using head tilt and chin lift technique

b. Look toward the chest and look, listen and feel for:

• chest rising
• air exchange
• exhaling of air

c. Give initial breaths:

• Two slow full breaths for adult and child
• Two puffs for infant

d. Check for pulse:

• Use carotid artery in the neck for adult and child
• Use the brachial artery in the upper arm for infant

e. Begin rescue breathing ratios until help arrives:

• One breath every 5 seconds for adult
• One breath every 3 seconds for child and infant

4. Have all participants practice rescue breathing on each manikin.
