STATION VIII

Boating Safety

Equipment needed:

Canoe or boat on trailer with necessary equipment, 2-3 volunteers, station sign

Lecture:

• Boating safety is for everyone! Ensure that everyone wears a Coast Guard approved life jacket of correct size — and properly fastened — whenever aboard a small boat or in an exposed position on a larger boat. Adults must set a good example by wearing one themselves!
• Everyone should know how to swim.
• Teach everyone in your "crew" to be a "lookout". They can help you avoid running into swimmers, other boats, exposed rocks, driftwood, etc.
• Explain the negative effects of alcohol and drugs on the body, especially when coupled with noise, sun,
and fatigue.
• Personal Watercraft Safety (e.g., Jet-Ski, Wave Runner&trade, etc.)
• Leave a trip or float plan with a responsible person and be sure to let that person know when you return.

Demonstration:

How to enter, balance, change positions, and load a small boat. If the boat capsizes, everyone should stay
with the boat.
