STATION III 

 Improvised Rescue Equipment

Equipment needed:

Broom stick, tree branch, oar/paddle, water cooler jug, picnic cooler lid, kickboard, reaching pole, seat cushion, life jacket (PFD), clothes, towels, station sign, 2-3 volunteers

Lecture:

Explain all the various pieces of equipment and demonstrate their use.

1. Extension Assists.

  a. Arm, leg, or body d. Kickboard
  b. Stick or branch e. Towels
  c. Oar or board f. Reaching pole

2. Throwing Assist.

  a. Water cooler jug d. Seat cushion
  b. Picnic cooler lid e. Life jacket (PFD)
  c. Buoy  

Have participants try all the equipment.

Set up scenarios and have the participants give assistance without jeopardizing themselves.

• Boating emergency
• Picnic by a lake
• Hiking near a stream

Ask: What could you use to help rescue someone from the water in each of these scenarios?
